英文中，If引导的假设条件句可分为多种不同的类型，其中一种叫second conditional（有时也叫conditional type 2）。在中文里，second conditional表示“对现在或将来不太可能发生情况的假设”。它的句式结构是这样的：If + Past simple, Would + base verb，即：If引导一般过去式从句（表示假设），主句时态用would+动词原形（表示结果）。
参考一个例句：If there were no wars in the world, it would be a much better place.（假如没有战争，世界会更加美好）。这是个典型的应用例子，世上很难没有战乱，因此这个假设是不太可能实现的。在if从句中，be使用过去式变成were，而主句中使用would加动词原形be。
再看几个典型的句子，If I were you, I wouldn’t take this offer.（假如我是你，我不会接受这个邀约）。由于我根本不是你，也不可能成为你，所以使用second conditional。又如：If I won one million dollars, I‘d donate a decent portion of it to charity.（如果我赢了100万，我会把相当一部分捐给慈善机构）。注意这里的I’d，应理解为：I would的缩写。
